Washington, October 16, 2025 – Former U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin will meet in Budapest, Hungary, in an effort to bring an end to the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The announcement follows a phone conversation between the two leaders, which Trump described as “good and productive” in a post on his social media platform, Truth Social. He added that senior advisors from both sides would hold preparatory talks in the coming days.
“As a follow-up, President Putin and I will meet at an agreed-upon location in Budapest, Hungary, to see whether we can bring an end to this ‘disgraceful’ war between Russia and Ukraine,” Trump wrote.
If the summit proceeds, it would represent one of the most consequential diplomatic developments related to the conflict since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022. No official date has been confirmed, but Trump indicated that preparations are underway.
The White House has not yet issued a formal response to the announcement. Reactions from international observers have ranged from cautious optimism to skepticism about the likelihood of a breakthrough.
